There is always a debate on which one is better. Should you choose to go with renting and letting the landlord handle all of the work for you, but be limited on what you can do with the place and not really have a home to call your own. Or should you choose to go with buying your home and having to take care of it all, but it is your own space and you are able to enjoy taking care of it the way that you would like.

There are a lot of  things to consider when making the decision on whether to rent or to go out and buy a home. And one of those considerations is to look at the cost of insurance. Renter’s insurance is going to cost a lot less than what you would pay for a homeowner’s insurance. Houses are going to be a lot bigger than an apartment, so it stands to reason that you will pay a lot more for your insurance when you move into a home.

You also have to consider what is covered in an apartment compared to what is covered in an apartment though. With renter’s insurance, you are just covering some of your personal items if something goes wrong. If someone steals them, there is a flood or storm in the apartment, or something else, then the insurance comes in. It is not going to help with fixing anything in the property though; that is the responsibility of the landlord. Homeowner’s insurance is going to cover personal items, the cost of rebuilding the home, the cost to fix things inside the home, and even additional property around the home.

This is why one is generally more expensive than the other. With renter’s insurance, you can often find a good policy for around $20 or less a month depending on who you go with. Many homeowner insurance policies will cost closer to $200 a month, but it can depend on a number of factors. Figuring this into your budget can be important before buying a home.
